Embedded Virtualization Engineer / Linux Developer

This unique and growing sector of embedded development involves mentoring customers with their own applications running on high performance micro kernels (Xen, seL4, etc).

Embedded virtualization works with the intermediate layer of software that is executing between the hardware and the guest OS on the target device or system. This would be by utilization hypervisor or virtual machine monitor (VMM) as host for one or more guest OS. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Design, code and debug applications and/or system-level software in various languages
  • Analyze and review software requirements
  • Identify and review code metrics, system risk and reliability
  • Perform software modeling and simulation
  • Perform software testing and evaluation
  • Support, maintain and document software functionality
  • Integrate software with existing systems and with embedded hardware designs
  • Maintain competence by staying current with latest technologies, products, and tools – especially those related to Xen and guest operating systems that run on Xen, such as Linux.
  • Manage tasks according to project budget and schedule
  • Work to identify specific opportunities for technology, tools, and process improvement 
  • Coordinate with and provide project status reports as required to the Project Technical Lead and Personnel and Program Manager
  • Understand best-practice software engineering principles
  • Commit to and meet scheduled deadlines for tasks assigned

Requirements: 

  • BS in Electrical Engineering (BSEE), Computer Engineering (BSCE), or Computer Science (BSCS)
  • Must meet ITAR eligilibility requirements listed below
  • Outstanding C programming and software development skills targeted at embedded applications
  • Embedded server level bare metal hypervisor experience (Disco, Xen, Denali, ESX, KVM or similar) 
  • Experience with Linux
  • Ability to work independently and with a team
  • Aptitude for learning new technologies and applications
  • Proficient  verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Competent in developing solutions as well as identifying problems

Helpful Knowledge and Skills: 

  • Experience with various types of programming languages (C++, C#, Ada, Java, etc.)
  • Knowledge of communications standards; such as Ethernet, CAN, TCP/IP, USB and others
  • Knowledge of multiple processor families, especially ARM (e.g. Xilinx Zynq, Freescale, Texas Instruments)
  • RTOS development experience, such as uC/OS, FreeRTOS, VxWorks, QNX
  • Experience writing a device driver, especially for Linux
  • Experience in aerospace, medical, automotive, or defense industry
  • Ability to adapt to a diverse customer base
  • Experience with engineering processes to ensure quality and robustness

Physical Requirements and Work Environment: 

  • Regularly required to stand or sit, reach, bend and move about the facility
  • Work in an office setting free from any disagreeable elements
  • Able to sit for extended periods of time while working on a computer
  • Ability to travel to undertake travel to customer sites between 5 to 10% of the time
