IoT Front-end Web Development Engineer

DornerWorks is a Designer-of-Things and has been increasingly cloud-connecting the “Things”.  We are looking for a highly-motivated and experienced Front-End Web Developer to complement our embedded systems expertise, especially in an effort to continue our recent IoT momentum.  This candidate would be intrinsically motivated to engage our customers in sales opportunities while developing web applications to connect complex embedded products, primarily in the B2B and M2M space.  As our IoT proficiency grows and the market for it expands, this role will have many chances to participate in strategy, business development, and team leadership.  This is a great opportunity to get in at the ground floor and help shape the future of one of DornerWorks’ rapidly growing specialties!

Note:  This position will require work to be performed in-person and onsite in Grand Rapids, MI.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Develop and maintain web applications for project assignments and customers
  • Collaborate with designers and developers to solve complex problems
  • Design and build clear, concise and aesthetically pleasing web app user interfaces
  • Troubleshoot bugs
  • Mentor interns and peers
  • Lead teams
  • Work with management to develop processes for successful web development
  • Contribute to estimation for new business
  • Work with sales to help identify new sales opportunities


  • 4 year Bachelor degree or above (CE, CS, EE or related)
  • Work onsite in Grand Rapids, Michigan
  • Meet ITAR eligibility requirements (see below)
  • Solid HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript experience and proficiency
  • Experience with one or more client-side libraries or frameworks like jQuery, AngularJS, React, Ember, etc.
  • Experience with CSS3 and extensions such as LESS
  • Experience with API standards/paradigms such as REST
  • Understanding the use of web security models (authentication/authorization, SSL/TLS encryption, etc.)
  • Implements secure web app development practices and is aware of common vulnerabilities (XSS, CSRF, SQLi, etc.)
  • General good programming practices (documentation, version control, communication, etc.)
  • Familiar with the best-practices for mobile/desktop responsive sites and cross-browser support
  • Experience with Git or other VCS/SCM systems
  • Experience with responsive web design

Desired Knowledge and Skills: 

  • Client-side Architecture Experience – Experience in the ground-up design of a front-end MVC-type application, including HTML templating, stylesheets, API-dependent models, test suites, etc.
  • Experience wireframing, creating mockups and generating graphical elements for use on the web Deep service-oriented architecture and REST services knowledge
  • Knowledge of current UX best practices and design processes
  • Experience in developing native mobile app
  • Familiar with server-side languages (such as PHP, Ruby, node.js, etc.)

Physical Requirements and Work Environment: 

  • Regularly required to stand or sit, reach, bend and move about the facility
  • Work in an office setting free from any disagreeable elements
  • Able to sit for extended periods of time while working on a computer
  • Ability to travel to undertake local travel to customer sites between 5 to 10% of the time
